Mountains of Europe | Switzerland, Germany & Hungary

Spread the love

With more than enough green grounds in the beautiful continent of Europe, every thrill-seeking traveler will find something worth their while. Of course, we do not mean simple hikes or faraway looks! For your next holiday, consider seeing mountains of Europe up close – we guarantee an unforgettable experience.

For starters, you can look up Switzerland, Germany, and Hungary – their wild panorama is almost hard to describe, so all you can do is visit for yourself. Now, let’s see what we are working with!

Mountain hiking

Switzerland

Among other things, Switzerland is very well-known for its impressive terrain of white mountain tops and imposing heights. There are plenty of summits to visit!

  • Mount San Salvatore

Starting off strong, Mount San Salvatore is one of Switzerland’s natural gems and a trendy destination for travelers wishing to indulge in active leisure!

Overlooking the city of Lugano, Mount San Salvatore is actually very close to Italy. With only the Lugano Lake in between them, the summit is the perfect meeting spot for both Swiss and Italian tourists, so prepare to make some friends!

San Salvatore is perfect if you love hiking but requires ambition, as the trek is not the easiest. That being said, the climbing routes are well-preserved and safe. Explore the natural wilderness and Lugano’s panorama!

  • Mount Lema

Mount Lema is another excellent choice for you to get to know the mountainous European salience. The perfect destination for mountain bikers and winter sports lovers, Lema is located near the village of Miglieglia. You should check it out, as you will have to cross it to reach your final haven!

If you want to reach the top via cable, make sure to check availability! It is usually closed during wintertime.

Germany

While most tourists deem Switzerland, Austria, or Italy their top contestants for a mountainous holiday, Germany certainly deserves a win, as well!

  • Bavarian Forest

What is actually extremely interesting about this site is the fact that the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest of the Czech Republic are very close to each other and, geographically, share the same mountain range! So, if you reach one peak or another, might as well say you have been at two places at once.

The majority of Bavarian Forest mountains are overlooked by the Bavarian Forest National Park, so rest assured – your hike will be of top quality and landscapes! We suggest setting off to Great Arber, the highest peak. Aim for the skies, right?

Also, if you still wish to visit, let’s say, Austria and compare the summits or hiking routes, do that straight from the Bavarian heart – take the Munich to Salzburg train and check more boxes!

  • Eastern Alps

While Eastern Alps are not solely German and can only be reached from certain parts, you might as well try it from here!

Once again, Bavaria is your go-to destination, and many even refer to Eastern Alps as the Bavarian Alps. You should head straight to the Mittenwald municipality, a top choice for hikers and skiers!

Eastern Alps are shared with the Austrian border but gain less attraction since it is relatively harder to reach. So, if you want to turn off the city noise and avoid big crowds, head to Bavaria and test your stamina there. While the highest parts of the Eastern Alps belong to Switzerland and Austria, the Bavarian peaks are an excellent way for you to start exploring. Especially if you are a beginner-level skier or hiker.

Eastern Alps

Hungary

Even less popular than Germany, mountain-wise, Hungary will also surprise you! Make sure to include the country in your itinerary and make it a part of your exploration. For example, you can always plan it right after Austria for a breath of fresh air. Just prepare for train travel from Vienna to Budapest, and your European adventure continues!

  • Bukk National Park

While Hungary lacks high peaks and certainly cannot compare with the Swiss Alps, they excel in perfectly thought-out hikes and treks. For example, if you visit the Bukk National Park, make sure to walk one of its top trails to see some of the highest summits in the country! With exciting flora and fauna, a shorter summit is just as impressive!

  • The Matra Mountains

Lastly, finish up with the highest peak in Hungary! The Matra Mountains are located in Northern Hungary and, once again, can be reached via an exciting hiking trail. That being said, the route is quite challenging and might appear difficult. So, beware if you are a beginner, and make sure to follow instructions and pay attention.

Apart from your gear, map, and goggles, make sure to grab a camera! Some of these sights are too impressive not to capture. And while a picture cannot compare, it will be nice to bring home a reminder of some of the most beautiful mountains of Europe. Good luck, and hike safely!
