How to make your sofa look brand new? Check out Leather Sofa Dyes
If you are planning to refurbish your living room with the latest interior design ideas and yet want to make some handsome savings on your furniture budget, dyeing your old leather couch might be what you’re looking for. While buying a new leather couch for your newly designed living room might prove to be an expensive expenditure, dyeing it at home into a new, fresh colour with a leather sofa dye can cut down on costs considerably.
A DIY guide to dyeing your leather sofa at home
The first step to dyeing is cleaning
A leather couch needs to be thoroughly cleaned to avoid problems of adhesion. Further, an unclean sofa can lead to uneven application of the leather sofa dye. Thus, the first step to dyeing your leather sofa anew is cleaning it thoroughly. You can clean your sofa through a gentle application of warm, soapy water or use a leather cleaning solution specially designed for the process. Do not forget to finish up your cleaning procedure with a gentle rub of alcohol solution which will eliminate unwanted waxes and silicones from the surface of your old sofa.
How to apply the dye
Applying a coat of leather oil before the application of the first coat allows the leather to absorb the dye in a uniform and even manner. Now that your sofa is spick and span, you are ready to plunge right into the dyeing process. Shake the bottle of angelus paint for a full three minutes before application. Do not forget to wear latex gloves throughout the dyeing process. It is also advisable to carry out the entire process in a well-ventilated area to avoid the inhalation of harmful fumes emanating from the dye.
Keeping these precautions in mind, sponge a little amount of leather dye onto your sofa as a first coat. This coat does not need to be even or perfect but does remember to sponge gently to avoid getting a foam of colour accumulated at a single spot. It is best to leave the first coat out to dry overnight in a well-ventilated environment but you can speed up the process by using a hairdryer. Keep applying two more coats using the same procedure. Every coat of dye needs some hours of dry.
How to apply the perfect finish
A leather sofa dye achieves a perfect, even finish if you spray the dye on it after the first three coats have dried off. Be careful not to apply excess colour. It is advisable to practice spraying the dye on a piece of paper to understand the degree of pressure that needs to be applied before direct application on your sofa. When the leather dye has completely dried, carefully apply a finish of leather sealant solution evenly throughout the nooks and crannies of the couch to ensure that the dye does not get transferred onto your clothes when you sit on the sofa. The sealant should ideally take about an hour to dry in a well-ventilated area.
Your old sofa now looks brand new at a very affordable budget. At the same time, it is a great fit for your newly designed living room.
