Unfortunately, there is always a but!

The But

The chemicals that are added to tap water can be an issue for your health. You will also find that even a small split in the pipes bringing it to your home can allow bacteria and other debris into your water supply.

The problem is that it is very difficult to spot this issue; until after the problem has developed. Of course, you could test your water as it comes out of your tap but this is not generally a viable option.

It is the safety concerns that have driven many people to use Filtap filters.

The Issues With Cooking in Tap Water

If you’re cooking then you are likely to be subjected the washed vegetables to intense heat. This should kill any bacteria present.

However, there is no guarantee that this will happen and then there are times when the vegetables are not cooked.

Tap water has chlorine added to it, as well as fluoride and several other chemicals. These are not generally destroyed during the cooking process. In fact, many bacteria can survive the cooking process!

There can also be an issue with debris picked up in the pipes. Lead is of particular concern as high consumption of this metal is known to result in health issues; specifically with brain function.

Yet many pipes are still made from lead and you might not know which ones are feeding your home.

Perhaps more worrying is that the small pieces of lead will dissolve into your water when heated.

This means that you will consume more of them and be unable to see or remove any of them after your food has been cooked.

If you wash or cook anything with tap water then the chemicals in the tap water will be transferred into your food; potentially giving you health issues.

Tap Water Is Safe

You may be told that tap water is safe but this is because it is considered bacteria and debris free when tested at the water treatment works.

However, this does not take into consideration the harm that the chemicals added to the water can do. It also ignores the debris and bacteria that can be picked up at the treatment station and your tap.

To be entirely safe it is advisable only to use filtered water when cooking or preparing food.

After all, it is not possible or practical to test the water every time you want to use it. Having a whole house or even an under-sink filter will ensure this is not an issue. You can drink or cook with your water in confidence; looking after the health of you and your family in the process.
