Incorporating a Rustic Feel Into Your Home

Although the rustic aesthetic has been around for a while, it does not seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Like many current trends, we are now experiencing a time where we look to past cultures and traditions for inspiration.

Think of the popularity of vintage fashion, the back to basics movement within food culture or even the rising value of the LP. All of these are ways in which society is trying to extract meaning from older traditions.

Part of this can be seen in our affection for the rustic charm when it comes to interior design. We now opt for exposed brick, large wooden accessories, weathered and reclaimed materials and earthy and natural fabrics. This particular aesthetic can be seen in cafés, restaurants and homes across the world adding to both a modern, urban appeal and a rural, country charm at the same time.

What is particularly interesting is the reasoning behind the fact that we seek comfort in kitting out our homes with all things rustic. Bringing nature into the home is perhaps something we rely on for comfort, a method of recharging and a sense of calm and peace. Just look at the recent “green extravaganza” that has taken us by storm: homes are now filled with geometric terraria, vertical gardens, trailing ferns, oversized cacti and colorful air plants. Our desire to create could also be behind our obsession with the rustic look and feel.

There is nothing like some DIY projects, home gardening, and upcycling discarded objects, to make you feel in control of your life and of course to fill you with a sense of pride and achievement.

In order to add that organic element to your home, we’ve come up with a number of ideas that are guaranteed to provide inspiration:

A pallet bed frame

Pallets have recently become an integral part of interior décor and are a cheap, easy and beautiful addition to the home. Simply figure out your design – consider features such as a headboard, the desired height and width, drawers or perhaps a paint or sand job – then gather your pallets, prep them, and assemble.

One of the most important things is to ensure you combine your frame with a strong and durable mattress made from high quality materials. Memory foam mattresses, like the ones from Eve, are a comfortable long term solution – just be sure to take the time to read the reviews to make sure it’s the right choice for you. With a top mattress and your beautifully crafted bed frame, you’re set for a good night’s sleep!

Wooden furnishing

Wooden furnishing is a relatively inexpensive way to incorporate the rustic look into your home. Aside from the obvious wooden dining table, chairs or cabinets, get creative with smaller wooden items to decorate your home – place mats, clocks, picture frames or light fixtures.

Exposed brick

When done right, exposed brick can be a beautiful addition to the home. If you are not in the position to have exposed brick walls in your house, there are other ways to incorporate this earthy element. A kitchen island made from exposed brick and topped with marble or wood works as a beautiful centerpiece in the kitchen. Or some simpler ideas would be book holders, coasters or picture frames.

Organic fabrics

One of the most enjoyable parts of decorating a house is deciding on the upholstery and soft furnishings. Try adding more earthy colors, patterns and organic fabrics to your home. Cushion covers, curtains, throws and rugs can all be an exciting way to experiment with this.
