Fun Shed Building Projects For The Whole Family

Spread the love

The term “shed” might conjure up images of wonky structures in which you will find tools and splinters. You’ll find the man of the house there working on a carpentry project or working out the best way to hang shelves. However, this view limits the immense possibilities when building a shed.

If you are excited to do some DIY building projects, how about starting with a shed? Instead of following a more traditional idea, you can create the perfect space for any member of the family.

Here are some fun shed building projects for the whole family.

A “Man” Cave

I hate that society has designated the “man cave” to men. I feel like the concept of a personal space perfect for hobbies like building, playing games, and drinking beer with friends was made just for me! Nonetheless, “person” cave sounds awful, while human cave sounds like something from the tool age.

Any adult in the family can benefit from a “man” cave. Consider this for your shed project. You may find yourself spending more time there than in the actual home!

A “She” Shed

As with the man cave, a “she shed” is unnecessarily gendered. I’m not on some sort of crusade here, but there is no reason a man cannot have a designated space for relaxation, crafts, creativity, and mindfulness. I prefer the term “me shed”, because it is so much more descriptive without relying on tropes that simply aren’t true for everyone.

A me shed is a great project because you need to focus on details and finishings. It provides a challenge to even the biggest DIY experts. In an ideal home, it is a space any member of the family can use when they need some time alone. Get everyone involved in building it, so that it reflects the whole family.

A Playhouse

Building a shed for your children may be the most exciting DIY project. You can let your imagination run wild, taking your kids’ ideas and reflecting them in a practical setting. Ot os a chance to get to know them better and spend time with them doing something useful.

One thing you should remember is that kids change much more quickly than adults. All too often, parents and kids create the perfect playhouse, only for the children to get bored or grow out of it within a year.

This does not mean you should be scared to commit to designs your kids love now. However, keep this in mind before doing work that will be impossible to change without taking down the whole thing. In other words, a supercool playhouse in the shape of a pirate ship may not last all that long. It is up to you to weigh up whether a possibly short-lived design is worth it.

Family DIY Space

Alternatively, you could create a shed that functions as the perfect space in which to do family DIY projects. Design it to accommodate the relevant supplies and have plenty of ventilation. Make sure there are no splinters. And let it be a mess!

Building a shed provides so many opportunities for the whole family. Decide on what you would like to create together and have fun.
