Continuing good habits, like running while you travel can be difficult. If you’re someone who travels a lot, and you’re a dedicated runner, you must have run into some problems along the way. You probably have a vacation or business trip planned in the next few months, and while travel can throw off your established running routine, it doesn’t have to throw a wrench in the works altogether.

With some ingenuity and pre-planning, you can take your running on the road, and use it to your advantage. Remember, running is a great way to get more familiar with the destination you’re visiting. Below, we have some tips on how to keep running even while you’re away.

Be Prepared

Pack your running gear and wearables just in case, whether you’re going on a business trip or a vacation. It might seem like your whole trip is already planned out, especially if you’re on a business trip, but meetings get canceled or delayed all the time.

If you’re on vacation, your family may want to sleep a bit longer in the morning, but you could use that time to get a workout in. Being well-prepared means, you’re going to be ready to run at any time and any place, so sneaking in a few miles throughout your trip will be way more comfortable.

Plan for it

If you don’t like the idea of going on a spontaneous run when your schedule allows it, be proactive, and don’t let circumstances dictate your situation. Plan for the time you’re going to spend running ahead and permit yourself to enjoy one of your favorite activities. This might mean you’re going to have to get up early or stay late during your trip, but if you’re dedicated, this won’t be a problem.

Use the Hotel Gym

Most hotels nowadays include a gym you can use if you’re a guest. This is especially handy if you’re on a business trip, as you can wake up a couple of hours before your first meeting of the day and complete a run without ever leaving the hotel using one of the treadmills there.

This will give you the flexibility of taking a shower afterward and arriving at the meeting refreshed and energized. Another huge upside of a hotel gym is that you don’t have to worry about the weather.

If you’re not a fan of the treadmill, try doing short high-intensity intervals to shorten your workout time, or swam the last mile or two for some strength or core work.

It’s OK to Let it Go

There’s always the option of letting it go when you’re traveling. We realize that this isn’t exactly the tip you were looking for, but we feel that it’s vital for you to understand that doing a week of shorter runs, or even skipping them altogether isn’t going to make a huge difference.

If you’re genuinely consistent during the rest of the year, you can allow yourself to relax while you’re on vacation. After all, isn’t the purpose of a holiday to recharge your batteries and step out of your routine. The rest might do you good.

Running While You Travel : Conclusion

The bottom line is that traveling and running can go very well together. Many runners agree that there’s no better way of getting to know a new city or area than running. All you need to do is change a few things and adapt as you go, or plan ahead and stay on top of the situation.

If you’re vacationing, just remember that resting and spending time with your family and friends should be the priority, and maybe moving running to the back burner isn’t such a bad idea for a few days.
