Uzbek Suzani In Home Decor

Spread the love

Have you been to Uzbekistan? No? Then you definitely should go one day. It is one of the most exotic, beautiful, impressive and controversial countries of Central Asia. Having previously been a part of the powerful and huge empire, it has some historical heritage sites which will take your breath away. Most probably you will feel yourself a personage of “One thousands and one nights”.

Here is a couple of photos from my husband’s recent trip there for your inspiration and motivation to go:

One of the most popular souveirs brought from Uzbekistan is its famous Suzani.

It is a type of embroidery usually executed on white (or sometimes colourful) fabric made of cotton or silk. Mainly it has floral design, but also can feature ancient magical symbols. The are many different schools of embroidery in Uzbekistan and each one has its traditional patterns, colours and ornaments. The size might also vary – from the little cushion size to large decorative panels up to 2-3 meters long: the last were usually made for special occasions such as weddings. Suzani was always and important part of cultural life in Central Asia: every woman had to learn this skill from young age and she had her works as dowry, which were then used in home decor of young couple.

Suzani became worldwide known not long time ago but since then they never go out of fashion.

It is now an irreplaceable feature of the modern eclectic and bohemian interiors. Designers love them because of their bold and unusual design and their ability to warm up any space and bring some exotic feel in it. I have prepared several stunning interiors for you, where suzani are used in absolutely different, but very creative ways:

1) Space divider. Here Suzani textile is hanged over the door opening – fantastic feature for creating privacy but at the same time making a focal point in the room:

6) You can also convert Suzani in one-of-a-kind window treatments. If you want to maintain more traditional look, use them as a colourful border for monochromatic curtains or blinds. Otherwise for creating bold and eclectic look apply them to cover the window completely:
