‘De-cluttering’ can be a word that many people find rather daunting. It’s one that often involves the process of wading through piles of hoarded possessions, making the ruthless decision of splitting them into ‘keep’ and ‘chuck’ piles and then finding the courage to emotionally part with many items that you have found yourself becoming unnaturally attached to.

However, it doesn’t have to be so physically and emotionally tasking. If tackled correctly, de-cluttering your home can actually be quite a cathartic exercise and might actually become a way of re-decorating, as well as de-cluttering your home.

Putting your creative hat on for a moment, there are actually ways which enable you to transform your hoarded items into interior accessories. If, like me, you find yourself gathering piles of magazines in your bedroom that you just can’t bring yourself to throw away, these can be used as a stylish feature on your living room coffee table, which provides aesthetic appeal and a light read for any guests you might have round.

Once you have cleared out as much as you can, there are lots of items that you can’t simply throw away, so it is helpful to create more storage spaces in your house, which look stylish but are also practical.

It can be very useful to situate a shoe rack and a coat stand in your hallway. This prevents unnecessary cluttering that often takes place in between the front door and the living room and generally establishes a messy, disturbed atmosphere for anybody who enters the house.

Another tip would be to use a console table in one or two of your rooms. These provide lots of space to pile books or insert boxes within which you can store your miscellaneous items without feeling too guilty. They also look neat and tidy and don’t cause too much disruption to the décor of a room.

Something you can do, which is also hugely on-trend amongst the designers of more modern photoshoot locations, is scatter hooks and pegs on the walls. You can hang different objects, such as keys or even necklaces, which might otherwise be left on the side of a table or shoved into a drawer. These give you a specific place to store more items, whilst also creating a pretty, artistic feature on your wall.

On a final note, you can buy things which are ordinarily used for a more practical purpose, such as laundry baskets, or bins, as a way of decorating your house. You would want to buy a stylish sofa for your living room, so why not also buy a stylish bin?!
