L’Essenziale Choice: 7 Beautiful Credenzas
For those who are unfamiliar with this beautiful Italian word, the credenza is a kind of low cupboard which consists of several adjoining sections. Today it has acquired the wider meaning, and it is used to describe different types of buffets and sideboards.
The origin of this term is very interesting. The word “credenza” in Italian means “belief” and in the Medieval period it was used to call the act of tasting the food and drinks by a servant in order to confirm that they are free of poison. Later “credenza” meant the room where this act was happening and finally the piece of furniture used for tasting.
Today credenzas are widely used in Interior Design and they are not only very useful and practical pieces of furniture with great storage facilities but also wonderful design solutions which can transform a blank wall into an attractive focal point.
I recommend using credenzas in living and dining areas. Taller pieces can be involved for dining purposes – storing dishes and serving, while lower sideboards can be used for display of decorative objects as well as for holding TV and media equipment.
Below is the selection of credenzas which I think combine functionality and extraordinary design. I’ve put away classical boring pieces and dull minimalistic objects which can be found everywhere. These credenzas are whimsical, bold and provocative. They will definitely take the leading role in the space and immediately draw the attention of anyone who enters the room:
1) “FOGLIOLINA” BY FORNASETTI.
Designer Barnaba Fornasetti continues traditions of his legendary father. “Fogliolina” means small leaf in Italian and this amazing cupboard is covered with abundant golden foliage.  Barnaba used the famous “Leopardo” chest created by his father in 1950s as the basement and added some of his own features like the face of Lina Cavalier, legendary Italian singer, replacing the animal’s image. This is a unique furniture piece which is hand painted and then lacquered also by hand. This credenza comes in different sizes, the smallest of which has only two doors, while the largest has four.
2) CREDENZA ” CHARME”
Black and white geometrical print is in big trend this season. This beautiful piece combines classical forms and avant-guard pattern which makes it suitable both for traditional and modern style interiors.
3) CREDENZA “AMANDA” BYÂ CREAZIONI.
This sideboard has four doors, carcass made of solid wood and decorative carving done completely by hand. White glossy lacquer gives this piece very elegant and feminine look.
4) CREDENZA ARIANNA BY CREAZIONI
Another piece of the same company has rather minimalistic design as the whole accent is done by colour – gorgeous deep shade of fuchsia. It will look perfect on any neutral background, for example, grey, taupe or white as well as it will perfectly match teal or turquoise for those who prefer bold colour schemes.
5) COLISEUM SIDEBOARD BY VISIONNAIRE
This credenza covered by glossy black lacquer has a rigid and masculine look. Amazing design is inspired by Antique Roman architecture.6) CREDENZA BY PAUL MATHIEU
The dark wood carcass is framed by fluid lines of polished bronze. A beautiful example of the harmonious partnership of geometric and organic forms.
7) CREDENZAÂ BY HERVE VAN DER STRAETEN
A very dynamic piece of furniture from the famous French designer. Very simple and plain shape of this credenza is enhanced by the whimsical metallic decor, and each of the inserts has different size and shape.
Do you like these pieces? Which one of them would you like to have in your own house? Looking forward to hearing your comments.
