Famous Movie Locations You Can Actually Visit

Contrary to popular belief that all movies are either computer drawn (today) or shot in pavilions (in the past), filmmakers often prefer to use the natural scenery: and we need to admit that even the most creative human minds can’t compete with nature in creating the most picturesque and dramatic setting.  

Inspired by Travel Republic film locations guide, we have prepared our own list of the famous movie locations that you can actually visit.

“Star Wars”

Scenes on Tataoine, the home planet of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, were filmed in the vicinity of the town of Matmata in Tunisia, in fact, in the Sahara Desert. By the way, it is believed that the nearby city Tatavin gave the name to the planet in the “Star Wars”.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, ” Skyfall “

The scenes around the cabin of Hagrid in this part of Harry Potter were filmed near the village Glen Coe in Scotland. Here, was also shot another part of the “Bondiana”.

Godfather

The charming Sicilian village Savoca is the “birthplace” of Vito Corleone in the film. Almost all scenes which took place in Italy were filmed here.

“Lord of the Rings”

One could simply write: “the whole New Zealand” for the location of this movie, however,  if anyone is wondering where exactly they found Mordor, it is the Tongariro National Park. A small New Zealand agricultural town Matamata with a total of 6,000 people has gained worldwide fame as the Hobbiton after the movie was released.

“The beach”

The island where we see Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “The Beach” even in real life looks like a paradise on Earth. Now the island has turned into one of the most visited places in Thailand – you can visit it with an excursion and for an additional fee even stay overnight.

“The Martian”

These surrealistic landscapes were shot in Wadi Rum desert in Jordan. By the way, these red lands can also be seen in the movies “Star Wars”, “Transformers” and “Prometheus”.

“Game of Thrones”

The Dark Hedges is perhaps the most beautiful beech alley in the world. It is located in Northern Ireland and is considered one of the most frequently photographed places in this neighborhood.

In the “Game of Thrones” this road became the Royal Route – the main transport artery of Västerås. You can see it in the 1st and 2nd seasons of the series.

Interstellar

Landscapes of Iceland became prototypes of the planets Miller and Mann, where the heroes of Interstellar landed. The scene, where the crew was escaping from a giant wave, was filmed in the lagoon of Brunasandur. And the scene of confrontation between Cooper and Dr. Mann took place on the glacier Snaefeldsjöküldl.

Avatar

ZhangJiaJie National Forest Park in Hunan Province is located in the central part of China and was turned into a picturesque planet Pandora in the famous movie “Avatar”. Many people were sure that the landscapes of the planet were drawn using computer graphics, but no – such a place really exists. This park is especially noteworthy for its high (up to 800 meters) quartzite rocks, as well as for the large variety of plants and animals.
