How To Make A Small Bedroom Seem Bigger

Spread the love

There are very few perfect houses in this world – there are many that are near perfect, and that people are more than happy to call their home, of course, and that’s wonderful. What’s even more wonderful is that those little imperfections can generally be fixed easily and quickly, with the minimum of money needing to be spent. That means that, although the house may not be perfect, your home can be perfect for you. Many people find that it’s the bedrooms that tend to be an issue in a house; they are often smaller compared to the other rooms such as the living area and kitchen. Thankfully, there are a number of design tricks that will make a smaller bedroom seem much bigger.

Color

Color can play a big part in the illusion of making a small room look bigger. Using light colors can really bring the room to life, enhancing all of the nooks and crannies that might otherwise be in shadow, therefore making the room seem smaller. Don’t use bright colors, and certainly don’t use dark ones – it’s best to stick with neutral tones such as cream or white, or pastel shades.

If you want to add a pop of color to liven up the room, do so in your bedclothes, or drapes, but keeps the walls as light as you can. When it comes to your floor and ceiling (the fifth and sixth ‘walls’ of any room) they need to be kept light too. A white ceiling is ideal (you can use 60 inch ceiling fans in master bedrooms to add a nice splash of color and interest to the ceiling too), and a light wood effect floor or cream carpet can finish it off perfectly.

Lighting

Every room needs lighting, but getting the right lighting for your room can make it look much bigger than it really is. Recessed spot lighting is good for a small space as it won’t encroach into the room. Make sure that each corner is lit well as shadows will make a room appear smaller. Can you include a skylight in your room? This is an ideal way of letting huge amounts of light in, and your bedroom will definitely look bigger for it. Also, by doing so, you’re improving your mental health through natural lighting.

De-Clutter

A small space will always feel smaller if it’s full to bursting with things. Have a clear out and de-clutter your bedroom and you’ll instantly see that it feels much bigger. If you need more storage you could consider using the space beneath the bed or adding shelves. Be careful with this idea, though, as if the shelves are too large they can make the room look small again.

Mirrors

Illusions using mirrors always work well to create the look of more space. Add some wall mirrors to your bedroom and they will reflect light and color into the room. Why not be daring and create an entire wall of mirrors? It’s fun and the room will feel huge!
