Connection with nature
Japanese style interiors are strongly connected with philosophy and religion of this country – Shinto and buddhism. For example, one main idea of Shinto is connection of humans and nature, the necessity to leave in harmony with the surrounding environment. That is the reason why Japanese interiors are mainly decorated with natural materials – wood, stone, bamboo, silk and cotton. You will rarely spot metal or any glossy artificial surfaces.
The color palette
The colors of Japanese style interiors are usually very tranquil and calm. As the background you will usually see off-whites, cream and grey colors which are complimented with warm wood. Any contrast touches are usually in black color, and you will rarely spot any bright vivid accents.
Aesthetic asketism
Following buddhist teaching the human should focus on the internal world, rather than external environment. A man should get rid of unnecessary things and be satisfied with little. The Japanese houses are usually very minimalist, and all things inside them have functional purpose. However the interiors do not look uninviting or cold because of the use of natural materials and plants.
Flexible planning
The Japanese interiors are famous for the foldable walls made of rice papers or fabric. Originally that minimised the risk during the earthquakes. When opened they create the sense of large space, not divided in little rooms.
Lighting
Special attention should be paid to the lighting. Try to incorporate natural light as much as possible – ideally by using large panoramic windows if you build from zero. Additionally you can place several lamps in different corners of the rooms, for example with authentic paper lampshade.
