Brighten Up Your Dingy Home – Here’s How
If you feel like your home is dark and dingy, there are a few ways you should be able to brighten it up in no time. This might depend on the reasons for your home being dark and dingy – after all, if your home is dark because the walls are black, then you will need to paint over them. However, if there are more serious issues present in the home, it’s advisable to call in a professional to help you. That being said, you’ll probably be able to find a few things you can do to brighten up your home. Read on for some ideas:
Change Your Window Dressings
Do you need to change your window dressings? If they are too heavy or dark, then they will block out light and make your home seem darker and smaller. This might not be such a problem in the winter, but in the summer, letting that light in is imperative to opening up a room. You can buy your window dressings off the rack, but you could have them custom made to fit your own windows, too. If you have large, small, or unusually shaped windows the latter may be the best option.
Switch Out Your Light Bulbs
Figure out which light bulbs you are using and swap them out if you need to. By switching them out you can make the home appear brighter. Just don’t use bright white light as this can make the home look sterile. Make sure you look into the different shades of light, how long they last, and which is best for each room. Dimmer switches mean you can control the light no matter what is going on, perfect for when you might want both task lighting and more relaxing lighting.
Replace Your Windows
This isn’t an easy or cheap fix but it could make the value of your home shoot up, as well as your enjoyment. Finding replacement windows could make a huge difference to how open and bright your place looks, and they will last for years. You will usually only need to replace the windows once in your home, so make the right decision.
Choose A new Color Scheme
Perhaps a new color scheme is in order. Brighter colors are great, such as white, blue, and yellow. You don’t need to go for bright white, although that is one of the best ways to brighten up the home and make it look bigger. Get creative and see what you can include. Use a color wheel to find colors that go well with one another.
Deep Clean
Give your home a deep clean, especially your windows. You’d be surprised at how the light finally bounces around the room and off surfaces and makes the place look amazing.
Place Mirrors Near Light Sources
Mirrors can reflect light around your home and make it look so much bigger and more luxe. Plus if you place them near light sources, they will reflect light further and give an even brighter look!
