4 Rules for a Sleep-Friendly Bedroom
If you are desperate for a good night’s sleep and are sick of tossing and turning until the morning, then you should take a good look around your bedroom. You may not realize it, but your sleeping environment is probably not the optimal sleep-friendly room, which is making it impossible to get the rest that you need.
Good quality sleep is not just something that you need in order to wake up on the right side of the bed each morning; it is a basic human need that affects your overall health. However, with modern-day technological advancements and with more of us working from home than ever before, there are distractions all around us that are making a good night’s sleep impossible to enjoy.
Therefore, we have put together 4 simple rules that will help you create a safe and cozy haven that is perfect for helping you drift off.
Make Your Bedroom for Sleeping Only
From watching our favorite TV shows late at night to turning our bed into a ‘home office’ many of us are guilty of not keeping our bedroom a sleep only zone. By using your room to take part in activities that keep you awake, it can become increasingly difficult to become relaxed enough to fall asleep when in the same environment.
Therefore, we recommend that you ban all work from taking place within your bedroom, and even if you find yourself working from home one day, you should create a workspace elsewhere. We also suggest that you remove all distractions from your room such as the TV. While we understand that getting cozy in bed and watching Netflix is a great way to wind down, it is not going to help you get to sleep at night.
Clean Out All the Clutter
We have all heard of the phrase ‘tidy room, tidy mind’, and for those of you who aren’t aware, it is basically a reminder that if your surroundings are chaotic and messy, then it is likely going to reflect in your mind as well.
For example, if when getting into bed at night you have to tidy off your bed and stumble your way through piles of books and clothes all over the floor, then you aren’t creating the right environment to help you get a good night’s sleep.
So, we recommend that you go minimalist in your bedroom space to help you get a good night’s sleep by creating a clutter-free and tidy environment.
Make Your Bed Comfortable
Many of us will be very shocked (and maybe even embarrassed!) if we stop to think about how long we have had our current bed and mattress. While you may not consider the type of mattress you have as having a huge impact on how well you are sleeping, you may be surprised. To get the rest you need, you need to be comfortable and relaxed, so your mattress needs to be the right one for you. If not, then you could find yourself suffering from muscle and joint pain, especially back and neck pain.
Ideally, you should be testing out your mattress before you buy. The right mattress will serve you well for a long time and will be a valuable investment. Some last 20 years and will remain in a high quality condition, providing you a great night of sleep.
Similarly, the types of pillows that you have on your bed will have an impact on how well you are sleeping – there are certain pillows available that can make a difference with neck pain, for example.
Get Off Social Media
In modern society, staying up late scrolling through social media is one of the main reasons why people struggle to get to sleep. Therefore, you should make your bedroom a phone/tablet-free zone to ensure that you get off social media.
For the benefit of your overall health and wellbeing, you should follow these rules and make your bedroom the perfect sleep-friendly zone.
