How to Choose a Dining Table Size for the Kitchen
Choosing the right spot for your table
With little more than 11 square feet (1.02 m²) you got enough to enjoy a small corner to eat in the kitchen. In fact, 48 inches (1.22 m) on each side would be the minimum free space you have to free in order or making room for the table. If you are thinking about doing it towards a wall (or corner), we recommend choosing one where there are no bars or shelves. If possible, place the table and chairs near a window.
When space it’s limited, but you have a large family, perhaps your best option is an extendable table that you can expand or reduce at will. You must take into account the surface once opened to have a minimum of comfort around. Another practical alternative is the folding kitchen tables. In this case, we can have up to three measurements as our needs vary, being able to fold only one or both wings of the furniture.
The table
Once you found the correct location, you will have to choose a table. It does not matter if the table looks very small. Surely you have eaten at the table of a bistro-type restaurant where tables are small and the space it’s optimized. A table of 23.5 inches (60cm) in diameter would be enough for two people to be comfortably. If it is square, with 23.5 inches (60 cm) on each side you will have even more room. In the other side, If the space is very tight the round tables are more grateful because the curve facilitates circulation and lightens the space and also, you get that bistro effect that we like. If possible, choose light colors or shiny finishes, as they are brighter and will help to visually enlarge your kitchen.
The chairs
They are the essential complements of our kitchen table and, as such, we must choose them with the same care. The great diversity existing in the market offers us a multitude of shapes, sizes and materials, from the most traditional to the most innovative. They have to combine well with the table and the style of the kitchen, be comfortable and not subtract much space from the room. In addition, they are the ideal element to provide a cheerful note of color.
In case of super reduced spaces, we can replace conventional chairs with folding models or stools. And if there is a possibility, banks can be installed on one of the sides, which saves us a whole row of chairs. This option is wonderful if the wall where we place the bank has a window.
Decoration
Finally, do not forget to include a decorative accessory to finish dressing your kitchen table. A nice vase with fresh flowers can be the detail of good taste that cheers the stay. Although if the table presents a very marked character, either for the material or its design, it is best not to add much ornamentation.
Also consider the importance of good lighting. Do not forget to put a lamp, preferably suspended ones will save space. Remember that you should use warm light (2700-3100K) to create a beautiful environment.
