How To Mix And Match Designer Furniture
When I look at the photos of interiors created by famous decorators I am always astonished of their ability to mix and match furniture pieces and decorative objects from different epochs and styles. When you buy a ready set of furniture or try to recreate a certain style, the interior often looks either too dull or too over the top. The secret of ideal design scheme for me is in moderation, that’s usually when elegance and harmony are born. Of course, you can hardly find moderation in Pop Art or Avant-garde movements, but this is totally a different story… Today, from an interior designer perspective I want to give you some tips on how to mix and match different furniture pieces and create one-of-a-kind, eclectic, interiors.
Repeat patterns and colors
Repetition of the colors and patterns creates a continuous sense of flow in the room and helps to unite the objects from different styles and time periods. Limit the accent colors to one or two, and the rest of the color scheme keep neutral – this will help to reduce the visual “noise” in the interior and highlight the focal points.
Use the artwork for texture and color inspiration
If you are stuck with choosing which colors and textures to use in your room and how to combine them together you can always seek some inspiration from the art. This way you can be sure that you achieve the overall complete and harmonious interior. Have a look at how pink sofa with damask pillows repeats the colors and patterns from the painting above:
Don’t be afraid to experiment
Who said that a modern leather sofa will be a bad neighbor to traditional Chesterfield? Combining pieces from different styles makes the space look more lively and eye-catching. However, if you go for such brave and bold decisions, I recommend you to stay more restrained in the use of color and pattern. Here neutral white-beige-black color palette softens the effect of mixing heterogeneous objects together:
Mix different materials
Nothing could look more boring than a dining set of a table and identical chairs surrounding it. Â Here designer not only used different shapes of wooden chairs but also mixed them with metallic ones, creating diversity and interest within one space:
Create focal points
If every piece in the room will shout out loud “look at me!” the whole space would resemble cacophony. Working on interior decor of your room, decide on which furniture piece will be a focal point and then the rest will take a secondary, supporting role, meaning that they need to be more subtle in color and pattern.
