Simple Design Ideas for Your Tiny House
By Molli McGee
When it comes to living in a smaller space, the designs you choose to play a role in how spacious it feels. Often times, the best designs are purposeful ones and provide some sort of function. While these functional ideas are useful for any small space, putting them into practice is particularly important when living in a tiny house.
For those of you who haven’t heard of tiny houses, they are typically no more than 500 square feet and can be built on wheels or a foundation. Where tiny houses lack in size, they make up for in spaces that are as beautiful as they are clever. By creating functional designs, tiny homeowners can go far with very little. Let’s take a look at some simple design ideas that will be perfect for your tiny house or small space.
Art with a Function
This is an opportunity to get creative with your wall decorations. Ask yourself what you can hang that will be aesthetically pleasing, but also useful. A wonderful example of this are metal clips (just like the one on a clipboard) to show off your photographs and to hang your grocery list in the same place. You could also hang baskets or tin buckets on the wall for additional storage.
A Ladder
Remember the vintage library ladder on wheels? A ladder creates a cozy library ambiance, while providing a simple solution for loft and storage access. You don’t necessarily need a ladder on wheels either. A few metal rungs bolted into the wall will do the same job. It also looks really cool!
A Lighter Color Palette
Did you know that darker colors can make a small space feel even smaller? It’s true. The darker colors absorb the natural light in the room, making it appear more enclosed. Stick to lighter hues or even a monochromatic scheme to share that sunlight around the room!
Be Smart With Mirrors
Aside from being necessary for those last minute outfit adjustments, it’s incredible what a few well-placed mirrors can do for a tiny house. Hanging a mirror opposite a window creates the appearance of a second window, and brightens the space. A floor length mirror at the end of your tiny home creates a depth effect and makes the space feel longer. Is there nothing a mirror can’t do?
Folding Furniture
Long gone are the days where a folding chair meant that ugly, metal chair from school. Nowadays, folding furniture has been given a new lease on life with a number of modern styles available for purchase. Folding furniture is an essential tiny house design addition for two reasons; the first being that it makes it possible to have guests over. The second reason being that you’ll want to get those chairs out of the way the minute your guests leave! Your chic folding chairs or stools can either hang on the wall or be tucked away into a nook.
Hopefully these purposeful design ideas have inspired you to integrate them into your own tiny house or small space! In the process of looking for your own small space? Check out some of these small house plans to start making your own design dreams a reality.
