Tricks That Will Make Your Tiny Bedroom Look Bigger
Some people consider their bedroom to be a place where they sleep at night and no more. The size and decor don’t matter, as long as they can fall into bed at the end of a long day. For others, their bedroom is their own private world and the room they focus the most attention on for interior design.
Decorating a tiny bedroom can be challenging, as you often have to work around a large piece of furniture: a bed. Here are some ways you can make your small room look bigger without sacrificing your king-sized pillow mattress or power bed that is adjustable.
Forget About Nightstands
Nightstands aren’t a necessity in the bedroom. They’re something people have been sold on for years as an idea about what a complete bedroom set looks like. Remember that marketing is powerful, and your bedroom can look complete and chic without the traditional nightstands on either side of the bed.
Instead, consider adding a small floating shelf on either side of the bed. This will hold your phone or glass of water while you sleep without sacrificing space. Alternatively, repurposing a wire wastebasket or wooden crate creates a designer-inspired surface to use instead of a bulky nightstand. You can also consider going without one entirely. After all, setting your phone on a shelf across the room will make it harder to hit the snooze button for that precious five more minutes of semi-sleep each morning.
Keep Colors Light
Dark paint colors can add comfort to a room, but at a cost. Dark colors absorb the light and make your already small space seem smaller. Instead, opt for lighter neutrals or crisp whites. You can incorporate your favorite color schemes through accent pieces, such as a painted dresser, throw pillows or curtains. You can also incorporate darker colors into your wall hangings, as this will add a lovely contrast.
If you really want that dark blue wall that makes you think of the night sky, add an accent wall behind your bed. This can also be used to replace a bulky, space-wasting headboard as it creates the illusion of one.
Mirrors Are Your Friend
Mirrors aren’t just magic in fairy tales; they create the illusion of additional space in your small room as well. Well-placed mirrors can also reflect natural light and ambient light in a way that reduces the need for lamps and fixtures. If you have a closet, consider installing mirror doors to improve the lighting and space within a room without overpowering the walls.
When placing mirrors, try to put them at the opposite of windows or close to light fixtures to get the best possible results. Eccentric and unique hanging mirrors are also a nice alternative to paintings and accent pieces.
Multi-purpose Pieces
When looking at pieces to include in your decor scheme, think about their functionality in addition to how they work in the room. Ideally, every piece you include in the room will have a purpose. A small side table might act as your vanity but also offer space underneath for storage. A bench at the end of your bed can be a lovely design feature where you store your clothing in lieu of a traditional dresser.
While looking at multi-purpose pieces, also consider how you can optimize space. The back of your door is a great place to install hangers. Adding shelves above your closet is ideal for adding decor pieces or books on your reading list. Think outside the box that is your tiny bedroom.
When you have a small bedroom, it’s essential that you keep it simple so that it looks cozy rather than crowded. A small bedroom is also a great lesson in minimalism for both interior design considerations and material belongings. Make the best of the situation and create your own cozy retreat!
