One Day in Conil de la Frontera
This summer I decided to explore the famous “tuna route” in Spain and started with Tarifa and Conil de La Frontera. Conil is a small and charming town in Cadiz region.
Approaching to Conil we stopped at Mirador Del Estrecho – amazing viewpoint near Tarifa where you can see Gibraltar and Africa (this is the narrowest part of the channel and it seems that you can actually swim to reach the African continent). The views are breathtaking and you can actually spend hours just gazing at the ocean, soaring eagles and leisurely grazing cows.
Once you approach Cadiz region you notice that surrounding landscape changing drastically compared to the other part of Andalucia.
Before coming to Conil I heard that it has the finest beaches in Spain so naturally, I decided to start my stay in this town by visiting some of them. One of the most famous is called “Cala Del Aceite” (‘aceite’ means olive oil in Spanish so initially I thought that I will find some sort of factory of olive oil but no – this is just the name and romantic allegory). The sand is very soft and has an incredible ochre yellow colour which creates an amazing combination with the ultramarine blue of the sky.
The best season to visit this area of Spain is in July – August when the wind is not so strong and you can actually swim. I was not so lucky and just stayed on the beach all time – the water in the ocean was around 18 degrees.
The town of Conil is very small – literally, you can go around it in 20-30 minutes. Like in the most of the cities in the south of Spain the houses are painted all in white. Just 10 minutes drive from Conil is another beautiful town called Vejer de La Frontera – don’t miss the chance to visit it as well and enjoy breathtaking views.
There are plenty of good places to eat in Conil, but I always ask recommendations from local people. I was told not to miss two bars – Los Hermanos y Los Hermanitos. In both, you can try delicious fresh tuna cooked in a variety of ways.
My favorite was steak from tuna – inside it was still raw and juicy, quickly pan-fried on two sides:
We stayed in the hotel called “Fuerte” and I can totally recommend it – the food, location, service – everything was great!
