2. Swim in Hokitika Gorge
Have you ever visited one of those places that belongs on a postcard? Once you’ve seen Hokitika Gorge up close you’ll know it fits the description. It gets its vibrant blue color from a unique cocktail of ingredients.
These include glacial water, plankton, and various other things. I know it’s tempting to run up and jump in, but keep a close eye on the strong currents. Walk over the long swing bridge for a better view.
3. Hang out at Mount Maunganui
You’ll realize why this is often voted the number one beach in the country before you step onto the sand. After you’ve finished splashing around on the beach you will need to climb up the mount to get the best view in the house.
When you see the peninsula below the trek up to the top will start to hurt less. The seaside town right beside it is an enjoyable place to stay too. There are lots of trendy restaurants and cafes to relax in.

Once you step off the boat on Waiheke Island you won’t even feel like you’re in New Zealand any more. It’s really strange because it takes about 45 minutes to get there from the Auckland central business district.
The tropical paradise has white sandy beaches and palm trees, so it’s a little more like Hawaii. If you’re a wine lover you’ll be glad to know it produces fantastic wine, which you can drink for hours in the sun.
5. Visit the Town of Rotorua
Rotoura is special because the tiny town sits on top of a volcanic plate. The moment you get too close you’ll smell the sulphur welcoming you in. When you’re exploring it feels like you are on another planet.
The geothermal activity means you’ll come into contact with bubbling mud, exploding geysers, steaming craters, hot springs, and volcanic lakes. It’s something you have to see with your own eyes to appreciate the beauty.
6. Abel Tasman National Park
If you feel confident kayaking around coves off the tip of New Zealand you’ll be in for a treat. Dolphins and seals might decide to take part in your epic journey. Abel Tasman National Park should be explored from the ground too.
Those who don’t mind walking for long periods of time can spread it out over 5 days, which will involve hiking down the coastal path. The scenery will blow you away and the memories will live with you forever.
