DIY Project: Pallet Daybed
Since I moved to Spain I am feeling grateful every day for the amazing weather that we have here. It is so nice to wake up and see the sun and the blue sky. And I feel even luckier because I have absolutely gorgeous rooftop terrace in my apartment. When I moved it was completely empty which I personally liked – I can decorate it to my own taste and needs!
From the first day I was thinking that it would be cool to have a daybed there and since this idea was not leaving my head this project became my first priority. I wanted to have two small movable daybeds that could be joined together or used separately as two sofas (a large bed to lay down to enjoy the sun or two seats for having outdoor meals). I thought that pallets would serve great for that purpose.
Here is the list of the supplies that I used:
- 2 pallets (120 x 80 cm each)
- a drill (diam 4 mm)
- 32 self-tapping screws (diam 6)
- 8 wheels (4 of them with breaks)
- 2 liters of exterior wood paint
- sandpaper
Steps:
First of all, I cleaned the pallets and slightly polished them with sandpaper. My goal was not to make a completely smooth surface – instead, I wanted to achieve more rustic, simple look.
Then I painted them with exterior wood paint and let it dry (I painted underneath pallets as well to protect them from moisture and rotting. I picked brown (walnut) colour which i thought would match great with terracota floor tiles and blue cushions that I bought. Somehow I always feel that dark brown colours make the wood look more refined and expensive (even if it is a pallet).
The next step was attaching wheels to the bottom of the pallets.
First I made holes with drill:
And then attached wheels using screwdrivers and screws. For each pallet I used two normal wheels and two wheels with breaks to make sure I can easily move daybeds around my terrace but then being able to fix them in a certain place.
I bought four floor cushions in Leroy Merlin size 60 X 80 cm – so two of them perfectly fit one pallet. And here is the outcome!
I like to sit here during the day time and enjoy some tanning and in the evening – spectacular sunset views above the sea.
The next project I have in mind is to make a sail shade (already bought textile for that!) and an outdoor cinema with projector.
What do you think of a furniture made with pallets – yay or nay? looking forward for your comments!
