How To Take The Hassle Out Of Home Renovation
Home renovation can be stressful. Sure, you have a beautiful house that you are proud to show off at the end of it. But during the weeks it takes to get to that point, your home will be continuously full of people, noise and dirt. Not a lot of fun.
So, how do you take the hassle out of home renovation?
Well, if you are about to make a few improvements around your house these tips should help to make it a little less stressful.
Do your research
Before you do anything else, do your research. Firstly, make sure you know exactly what you want to do and how you want it to be done. Next, be aware of what permission you need, if any – and make sure you adhere to these. Finally, compare contractors both on their price and reviews – there is no point going for the cheapest if they aren’t going to do a very good job.
Budget!
While you are researching it is important to keep your finances in mind.
There would be nothing worse than getting halfway through the project only to discover that your pot of savings has run out. Create yourself a spreadsheet, where you can keep a record of exactly what you are spending and how much you have left to play with. Start this before you commit to anything – so you don’t overspend in one area and then have to scrimp in another.
Call on the experts
Don’t try and do it all yourself. This may be cheaper in the short term, but it could cause you a lot more stress and money in the long run. Call in the experts and let them do it for you. You can always do the finishing touches yourself!
Remove as much as you can
This is the perfect time to have a clear out! A couple of weeks before the work starts – so you can take your time – make your way around each room and create three piles. One is for the bin, two is to donate to charity and three is to sell. Once you have done this it is time to get rid of the rest (apart from the essentials, of course), both to keep your belongings safe during renovation and to make the job much easier. But where are you going to put everything, you ask? Well, why not take advantage of self-storage? There are many different types of storage across the country, so you are sure to find one to suit your needs.
Ask for help
Now is the time to call in a few favors – perhaps, if you have pets, you might want to see if you can leave them with friends or family while the work is being carried out. The continuous noise could be incredibly stressful for animals, which as a result will make you feel more stressed. So, get them out of the house and eliminate this before it is a problem. Likewise, if you have young children you might want to send them to stay with your parents (either with or without you – depending on your situation) so you don’t have to worry about them around the machinery and scaffolding.
Take a holiday?
Of course, you could make sure that your summer holiday coincides with the work being done on your house. Then you can leave behind the stress as well as the noise and dirt – and instead enjoy sun, sea, and sand. On your return, you will be much closer to the house of your dreams. Just make sure you are contactable, you don’t want any issues to sit unresolved for the duration of your holiday.
