Luxury Essentials: What Goes in to Making a Bespoke Bed by Hand?
Suffering from insomnia for the 7th day in a row made me think that the problem lies in my bed… During my life I had an opportunity to stay in some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, and the thing which always delighted me most was the incredibly comfortable beds and mattresses that they used to have. And I always was wondering “Where do the take them from?”. Well, in today’s post I am going to reveal one of those manufacturers, which produces bespoke luxury beds still made entirely by hand (same as 100 years ago) – Savoir Beds.
The history of this company is also closely connected with hospitality industry – their first beds were created for the Savoy Hotel in 1905, where for over 100 years various celebrities, such as Sir Winston Churchill, Giacomo Puccini, Marilyn Monroe had the opportunity to experience the cloud-like comfort that they provide.
Each mattress is made by one crafstman for a specific client, according to his individual requests and needs. The beds are entirely hand-made, using the finest natural materials, such as FSC certified knot-free pine and beech, lambswool, cotton, horsehair and steel springs. Considering all these, the price for such bed (and this is a lot of money!) seems reasonable, as it’s going to be an investment that pays off every morning of your life. I know I am going to make one of the most hackneyed metaphors, but Savoir is really something like Rolls Royce in the world of beds.
This year The Savoy celebrates 125th anniversary since its opening in 1905 and it asked Savoir Beds to design a special bed on that occasion. The design was inspired by 1920 and 3os – the heyday of glamour, jazz and movie stars at The Savoy. The elegant shape of the bed was highlighted by deliberate use of single fabric to upholster the headboard, base and even legs. Thus, there are no fussy details to distract from observing the beautiful simplicity of its forms.
Savoir beds often work with world-renowned designers to produce one of a kind and innovative designs. One of the latest collaborations was with French designer Christophe Delcourt and the result was stunningly elegant Ian bed in Nordic style with simple, clean shapes and modern, minimalistic look.
Another remarkable collaboration was with New York/London based contemporary interior designer Philipp Gorrivan, who created a bed that represents his concept idea of “classic life…. unexpected style”. Intricately shaped headboard is upholstered in a striking checked fabric taken from Philip’s range for Duralee.
