How to Create a Drop Dead Gorgeous Family Room
For many people, the family room is the heart of their home. It’s where the kids play games, do their homework or watch TV, and where the adults do much of the same. Because it is such a multi-functional room it needs to be all things to all people, which can make decorating the place rather difficult. But if your family room is in need of a makeover, don’t worry because there are lots of things you can do to transform an ordinary, slightly boring room into something amazing.
Decide Upon a Colour Scheme
Choice of colour is the all-important decision to be made before you do anything. Colour can make or break a room and if you get it wrong, people are less likely to want to spend much time in there.
Neutral colours are soothing or boring, depending on your point of view, whereas bold, bright colours are vibrant or painful, again depending on your point of view. Colour is very much a personal choice.
Some people prefer calm pastel shades whereas others love bright, primary colours such as cherry reds, sunshine yellows and lime greens. Since this is a family room and everyone will be using it, it is a good idea to have a group consultation before beginning your project. If opinions differ, try and come up with a compromise. For example, you could use bold colour on a feature wall and stick to neutral tones elsewhere.
If in doubt about your colour scheme, buy some match pots and test them out first. Don’t forget, lighting will make a big difference to how a colour looks on the wall.
Create a Feature Wall
A feature wall is a great way of jazzing up a family room; or indeed any other room. If you already have wallpaper on the walls, some steam cleaners such as those from Karcher have attachments to help you easily remove it. You can then prepare the surface for new wallpaper. Alternatively, if you can’t decide on a style of wallpaper, opt for a bright and bold shade of paint colour instead. At least that way, if you hate it, you can always repaint the wall in a different colour.
Invest in Comfortable Furniture
Family rooms need to be comfortable. At the very least you will need a sofa or two for the family to relax upon, but useful alternatives include large floor cushions, beanbags and recliner chairs. If the room is large enough, you could have some large floor cushions in a corner with the games console and then position a sofa near the TV. A desk may also be useful for kids to do their homework or play on a computer.
Accessorise
Accessories can really finish a room off. If you want to make a design statement, look for great artwork to hang on your walls, or create your own if you are artistically inclined.
There are lots of ways to transform your family room into a space the whole family will want to spend time in. You don’t even need to spend a fortune – buy second-hand items if money is tight!
