The Ultimate Toddler’s Bedroom Makeover on a Budget
Everyone craves a little change from time to time and your young toddler is no different. With the baby bed taken out and your young one eager to express his own style, redecorating your toddler’s room can be a daunting task. Your “little one” is no longer a baby and those decorating days would’ve been much easier. Let’s face it, choosing the décor for a nursery is done the way you want it with you baby perfectly content regardless.
So what do you do when your toddler’s room needs a change? How do you create room that you’re young one will love now and grow with them over the years? Better still, how do you do all this on a budget? We check out a few bedroom makeover tips your toddler will adore!
1. Consult with Your Toddler
As motivated as you may be to take control over the project and decorate the way you want, it’s important to have your toddler’s input too. In your eyes, the room can be perfectly decorated but how does your toddler feel about it? Your toddler’s obsession with purple unicorns or racing cars may not be ‘your thing’ but learning to respect their taste is essential.
Start by narrowing down some options and let your toddler choose. If you’re looking at paint colours for example, pick two – three that you and your toddler can meet halfway with, and then let them have the final say. This way, your young one will feel like they’re making those ‘big kid’ decisions to encourage a sense of pride in their bedroom makeover project.
2. Show the Windows some TLC
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to transform a room is by the window dressings. Whilst it may not be the most exciting part for your toddler’s project (in their eyes anyway!), a new set of shades will give any room a fresh new look. Windows can also make the perfect focal point if you find some fun designed curtains or blinds your toddler will love.
Safe and simple is still a priority though, so whilst you want your toddler to help choose the colour or pattern opt for shutters or roller blinds which tend to be the most cost-effective. Some other kid-friendly options can include roman blinds which combine the luxurious appeal of curtains with the easy-to-use mechanisms of blinds. Your toddler will also have a good range of colours, fabrics and patterns to choose from to brighten up their room! Don’t forget to take into consideration the light and privacy control the shades will give the room and any safer cord pull systems were required.
3. Focus on Fun
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to portray an element of ‘fun’ in a toddler’s room. Fun is important, to help them learn, grow and cherish those younger years that vanish way too quickly. Giving your toddler a say in the design part can be a fun learning curve for them. Start by creating a shell for them to work with and see what they can do with it.
A big part of change is letting go, and no doubt your toddler has baby toys and other bits and pieces they want to hold on too. If you’re finding that the room is too cluttered, you can help with the move on process by turning it into a positive experience, like a new and organised room.
Brighten the walls with artwork to help create elements of fun too. If budget is tight, you can frame some artwork your toddler has done themselves or encourage them to do something up especially for the area. This way, the room will look fun and colourful and your toddler will be proud to have put their mark in too.
When you’re focusing on fun designs, view the room from your toddler’s eyes. Hanging things on the wall should be at their eye level too and be sure to take the designs right up to the ceiling. Toddlers are more likely to look up than adults – especially when they’re lying in bed, so carry out the theme and use the ceiling as a focal point for them too.
4. Colour their World with Paint
Paint is another cost-effective way to really change the dynamics of a room. Not only is it a relatively cheap option though, but it’s easy to change as your toddler grows up or starts a new phase. Colouring your toddler’s world can be as simple as painting the whole room a new colour, or as fun and quirky as creating a feature wall your toddler can proudly show off.
Again, coming up with a few colour themes initially and then allowing your toddler to pick their favourite is ideal. Look at the option for a feature wall – something they are really into at the moment, that you don’t mind allowing.
Compare, with your toddler, whether they would like to use the same colour throughout the room or do something different and go with a feature wall. If you’re not in a position to repaint walls, you can still colour their world with fun rugs, pillows and throws or an update of furniture. If updating the furniture is not in the price range, you can recolour it to make it look fresh and new again – plus, your toddler can help!
5. Storage is Essential
With oodles of toys, drawing utensils and bits and pieces your toddler is holding onto from those baby years, no doubt it doesn’t take long for that room to get messy. Thus, it’s crucial you organise adequate storage that encourages your toddler to keep the room (relatively) organised.
If your toddler is into art, a great cost-effective way is transform old soup cans into a clever organisational system to sort art supplies. Consider upgrading your toddler’s bed to one that has storage underneath, or buy some boxes that can be used as storage tubs under the bed or in the cupboard. Work with your toddler to label the boxes or colour them accordingly.
Your toddler will be bound to accumulate a lot of stuff over the next few years so start getting creative on how you can organise the space. If you have a young sports lover, make a football-shaped box and encourage them to keep sports memorabilia or bits and pieces in there.
6. Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise
Accessories are another element of fun and colour that’s easy to incorporate. Best of all, if your toddler’s likes and dislikes are forever changing, accessories makes it much easier to accommodate this. Update old rugs, bed linen and pillows with new colours, styles and patterns to give the space a refresh.
