Tender Appeal of Pastels
Pastels colours are humble and calming, very feminine and soft. When the spring comes we always remember about them as they remind us of tender blossoms, bright blue sky and gentle warm sun.
Pastels, in fact, are all hues on the colour wheel which are maximum close to white. They allow to create a lot of colour combinations within one room never being too flashy or loud. Practically there is no limit how many pastel colours you can mix in one space, but there is one condition: all of them need to be in the same value, in other words, contain the same amount of white pigment. It is possible to add some bright accents, but it is important not to overdo it limiting them to one or two details.
Since all pastels contain a lot of white, this is the best colour which compliments them. It makes the space look even more fresh and delicate.
Interiors in pale tones are always very relaxing so it is perfect to apply these colours in bedrooms and bathrooms. If you like to make changes in your home decor often, it can be very easy achieved with pastels. Decorate big surfaces such as walls, floor and ceiling in neutrals and white, while textiles and accessories choose in pastel colours. Enough to change curtains and cushions and you will get entirely new look!
Many people are scared to use pastels as think that their house will look too pale and dull. Using various textures, such as wood, different fabrics, knitted accessories will add additional interest. In fact, untreated wood is one of the best materials to use as it is naturally coloured in pastel shade of beige.
Kitchen is perhaps one of the best spot in the house to experiment with pastels. They will make this room very joyful and bright – perfect for a place where you meet with friends and family! Various cooking utensils and equipment in “milky” colours so popular in mid-century decor is a big come back now. Another trend today is to paint chairs in various soft, washed out colours: for example, baby blue, mauve and pink – in the result the kitchen will look very modern and quirky.
Another great combination is duo of grey and soft peachy pink. Grey looks solid and masculine, while pink softens it and brings a touch of femininity, which makes this combo perfect for decorating bedroom for a couple.
If you like pastel interiors there are plenty of do-it-yourself projects you can do by experimenting with paint. You may try so popular “ombre” effect for painting walls, where colour gradually becomes lighter toward ceiling, or so called “dipped” chairs, with legs painted until the middle in various pastel hues. One of the easiest projects to try is to buy a spray paint and use it to change the look of the old furniture – all what you need is a garage which you are not scared to get dirty.
