About Displaying Art, Layering Photos And Ryan Gosling In My Bedroom

Displaying art is an art itself. Doesn’t matter what it is – an art vessel, painting or beautiful photography the main task of a designer is to draw attention to it and present it in the most favourable light.

In this article I will mainly focus on photography as creating beautiful vignettes and displaying art vessels is another big topic.

So you want to decorate your walls with photography. There are several possible ways you can go:

1) Think big. Oversized photography taking the major part of the wall can make a huge impact. In that case no need to support it with anything else – just give it a main role in your room decor. One thing to remember is the principles of symmetry – photo needs to be hanged in the middle of the wall or above the centre of big object, such as sofa, table or bed:

2) Create collage of several large photos placed next to each other. For creating a flow and harmonious feel they should be united by colour palette or theme:

3) Size versus quantity. Imagine putting small 10 X 15 photo on a large empty wall. Looks quite bizarre and pityingly, no? So, if you have small photos you want to display, the best way is to create a gallery putting a lot of them next to each other (when I say a lot, I really mean “a lot”, not just 3 or 4). It is not necessary to choose only black and white or only colour photography – you can unite them all by using same coloured frame and passe-partout:

3) Make a difference with supporting images. Have a look at the space below and now imagine it with only that big photography of Sophia Loren hanged above credenza – boring, isn’t it? Adding smaller size photo and wall light involves the principles of symmetry and also makes the art skilfully lit:

4) Create layers. This is my favourite option, as it gives depth to the composition and also creates interest as our eye intuitively want to see what is behind:

Another thing which I totally love is when photos are not hanged but stand on the floor leaned against the wall. It creates a feeling of  “incompleteness” of decor, as there is still something to do. It also reminds me of the painting studios and this trick is so often used in decorating bohemian style interiors.

So for my bedroom decor I decided to use “layers” for displaying photos and also involve in it one of my favourite actors or actresses. I was hesitating whom to choose as there are so many I adore: Sophia Loren, PenĂ©lope Cruz, Brigitte Bardot, Marlene Dietrich and Grace Kelly to name a few. Among men actors my favourite now is Ryan Gosling. Oh my god, I sound like a teenage girl, no? But what to do, I really think that he is one of the most talented and handsome actors right now. I also like his impeccable style. And I think he looks really cool in my bedroom:

And what is your favourite actor or actress? Do you like using photos of celebrities in home decor? Looking forward for your comments!
