NINA : The Poesy Of Life, Beauty And The Universe…
Visiting several days ago Museum of Contemporary Art in Yerevan I was fascinated by original sculptures of famous Armenian ceramicist Nina Khemchyan, who has been living and working in Paris since 1993.
All her sculpts are made in simple spherical form: the shape of the Earth and all other planets. Perhaps this might be the reason that there is something cosmic in her works and it seems that they concentrate in them the whole wisdom and beauty of the Universe.
Since ancient times sphere was considered as a perfect, “original” form, which contains the possibility of all other forms inside it. It is also as symbol of renewal and the cycle of life. This aspect is highlighted by curvilinear forms of the engraved images: they have no beginning, no end and seem to say to an observer: “This too shall pass…”
Sphere was a very honoured symbol in the Ancient Arts: many gods were depicting holding globe or ball in their hands. Nina’s works have something from antiquity as well: perhaps it is the perfect plastic harmony of forms or the chanting of the beauty of the human body or light flowing dresses resembling Greek togas. Whatever it is, but Nina’s sculpts send us to the origins of Art, being at the same time very contemporary and actual.
Imaginary world depicted on the spheres is full with sensuality, however this sensuality is very delicate and tender, never vulgar.
Nina always works with only two colours: black and white. Like Yin and Yang this monochrome vision represents the world which is based on interaction of two contrary forces. Thus, shadow can’t exist without light, man without woman and day without night. Everything is interconnected and interdependent and that is how harmony is born.
