Futuristic Architecture of Baku, part 2: new incredible projects
It looks like Baku, Azerbaijan seriously has taken the route to becoming the most ultra-modern city in the region. I have already highlighted some futuristic buildings of this city , but since then I came across several outstanding projects which I just cannot skip. Most of them are already built, some are in construction process, and there are few which are still in the project.
1) Full Moon Hotel located on the Baku seaside of Absheron Peninsula is on the construction stage. This unbelievable project is performed by South Korean company – Heerim Architects & Planners, one of the most famous and largest in this country. The hotel has a very interesting architectural decision: it appears absolutely different depending on the angle it is seen from. In front it resembles a Death Star from Star Wars, from behind it looks like a rising moon, and from the side it is just ordinary glass building:
2) Caspian Lotus – the highest fountain in Europe (120m). It is built in the middle of Baku seafront. In the night it is beautifully highlighted and can be visible practically from every point of Baku Boulevard. Architects: Gemini Studio.
3) Caspian Diamond – another project of Gemini Studio. Restaurant with glass walls in the shape of diamond is located on the pier in Baku bay and can be accessible from Baku Boulevard.
4) Concert Hall – it looks like concerts are very important part of Baku social life. Otherwise how else to explain huge investments made in this area: a sensational Baku Crystal Hall constructed in record period right in time for the opening of Eurovision 2012 and incredible project of Heydar Aliyev cultural center performed by famous architect Zaha Hadid. Below is another Concert Hall of Baku, perhaps less grandiose but still very interesting and curious. Architects – Gemini Studio.
5) Entertainment Center – another project of Gemini Studio. The walls of this building are made of huge polyhedrons joined together:
6) Zira Island entertainment city and Zero Energy resorts are two projects within one located on Zira Island in Caspian Sea within the borders of Baku bay. The inspiration and model for this project was natural landscape of Azerbaijan: glass buildings resemble seven mountain peaks of the country. Architects – Copenhagen based group of architects BIG. The project is focused on use of sustainable energy entirely independent from external resources and is aimed to be a model for future urban development. Well, in my opinion it is quite symbolic that this development is taking place in the city which is in TOP 25 most polluted places on earth but good intentions are always praiseworthy.
What do you think about these projects? I am interested to hear your opinion.
