Modern Glam Sideboard DIY

Spread the love

It’s been a while I made this credenza for one of my interior design projects in Moscow and I completely forgot to share it here on the blog. Now when I stumbled upon the pictures of it in my phone, I thought I will write a blog post about it.

It is very hard to do a design project within a very limited budget and you have to be really creative to make it work. So this was one of those where I had to invent decorations with little or almost no costs. The total value of materials I spent to make this sideboard was around $100.

One thing I mention from the beginning – I have assembled my sideboards from furniture boards but I don’t recommend to follow this route and just buy ready unpainted cabinets from IKEA. If I had done so it would save me lots of time and effort plus the sideboard would look neater.

So here are the materials that you will need for this project:

  1. Ikea cabinets
  2. sandpaper
  3. acrylic paint of the color of your choice
  4. painting supplies: roller, roller tray, brush
  5. furniture varnish
  6. 6 metallic furniture feet
  7. spray golden paint
  8. screws, drill and screwdriver

Instructions

  • Prepare the surface of the cabinets for painting by sanding them with sandpaper. Apply the paint with roller in two layers and let it dry. Cover with transparent furniture varnish.

  • In the meantime paint the furniture feet with spray paint. You need to be careful and not to apply the paint excessively otherwise it will leak and the ugly drops will appear.

Put the legs upside down and let them dry completely.

  • Attach the feet to the bottom of cabinets using drill, screws and screwdriver. We have also mounted our sideboard to the wall for greater stability. Now it was time to decorate it.
  • I used black and white posters as well as golden sun mirror which corresponded to the color of the feet.

The top of the sideboard was decorated with books, plants and golden candle holders from H&M home. The artificial monstera leaves and vases were from IKEA.

I tried various setups before I found the one which I liked most.

I used the theme of New York Fashion – posters of Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss and vintage edition of New Yorker completed the look.

When I picked a color for my credenza I used complimentary color scheme – bright blue was complimenting the brick red color of the sofa in the same room:

Hope you liked this project! Looking forward for your comments!
