There’s no question that the go-to holiday colour scheme is red and green, which is why after so many years of decorating with the same ho-hum chachkies you’re ready to mix it up. There are a number of beautiful colour combinations that can make your home feel festive and fun, but choosing those combinations can be tricky.

Christmas decorating decisions can be much easier if you have a central color scheme. One way to do this is to focus on the colors you already have in your home; if you choose decorations in complementary hues, it will enhance the items you have without clashing with them. Or you can go with colours that bring back fond memories of the holidays when you were growing up — silver like the shiny tinsel on your childhood tree or red and white like the candy canes you loved to eat while watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Here are some other eye-catching and beautiful holiday colour themes that go beyond basic red and green.

Dreaming of a White Christmas

If Irving Berlin’s classic song about dreaming of a White Christmas is one of your favourite holiday tunes or you adore everything to do with the snowy season, a white decor theme featuring a gorgeous white Christmas tree might be the thing for you. Decorate your tree with white, cream, light tan and silver ornaments. For your house, place off-white pillows and snowmen decorations around the room, and when wrapping gifts, stick with plain cream paper accented with silver or gold bows.

Bring the Outdoors In

Colors you find in nature always work well in decorating, and this is also true when decorating for the holidays. Green and brown are a great combo; you could decorate a classic green Christmas tree with brown and tan ornaments, then add several shades of green for candles, tablecloths, decorative pillows, trinkets and more. Hang green and white stockings on the mantle, and choose woodsy ornaments like owls, birds and other critters you would find in the forest.

Go Hot With Bright Pink

Hot pink has become a trendy and gorgeous holiday colour. Fuchsia, magenta and bubble gum pink tones look amazing as your holiday decorating colour scheme, especially when they are paired with silver or gold. You can also bring in the classic holiday green for some Christmas tradition — but opt for a brighter lime green than a dark shade. Look for pink ornaments and pair them with small gold baubles and silver tinsel, hang light green and pink stockings near the tree, and buy cloth napkins and a tablecloth in these shades along with plates in complementary colours.

Decorating for the season should be fun, and when you are finished your home should still feel like “you.” Give yourself permission to donate at least some of the decorations that you don’t really love and spring for some new ones that are in a colour theme you adore. You’ll be glad you did.
