Think back to the 1960s and every home has a shaggy rug proudly on display. Their stunning texture is perfect for the colourful and vibrants 60s, but they eventually fell out of the spotlight slightly. That is, until recently. Making a big comeback in the later 90s and early 00s the shaggy rug has earned itself a place among buyers top favourite rugs.

The name “shaggy” comes from the length of the pile. The longer the pile length, the “shaggier” and thicker the rug is. Therefore, shaggy rugs have a gorgeous texture and feeling underfoot, ideal for adding that needed bit of comfort to your home. When thinking about using a shaggy rug its important to consider the room you plan to use it in. Since they are incredibly textured, you might want to avoid using other highly textured accessories such as cushions for example. Too much texture in a room can drown the space and make it feel a bit busy. This ultimately damages the final look as the room will feel smaller and less aesthetically appealing. Instead, use a shaggy rug as the main source of texture in a room and match with simpler accessories to bring back some balance.

Since they are unbelievably soft these rugs bring that plush and cosy feeling with them. Therefore, avoid walking on your rug with outdoor shoes. The heavier the foot, the more you are going to wear down and flatten that almost fluffy-like texture. With this in mind, shaggy rugs are perfect for lounges or bedrooms where you are more likely to not be wearing shoes. Not wearing shoes around your rug will also reduce the time and effort needed to clean and maintain it and it is less likely to pick up dirt and dust.

Since they are incredibly popular, shaggy rugs are available in a huge range of colours making them easy to incorporate into your home. Whether you’re after something subtle and neutral or something a little bolder, you will be able to find it with a shaggy rug. If you have your heart set on a shaggy rug but you’re worried about it being a bit too eye-catching, then simply use a rug of a similar colour to your floor. Matching your rug and floor colour will help the rug to blend in slightly and will give you the comfort benefit of the rug more than anything else.

In terms of maintenance, shaggy rugs are very easy to care for and if cleaned regularly you can increase the life of your rug massively. If you have a smaller shaggy rug, a simple shake outside will loosen any of that trapped dirt and dust. For larger rugs, you can give them a once over with the hoover. When vacuuming, however, use a lower setting so to avoid damaging the delicate and softer texture. Always read the manufactures guide when you purchase your rug as this will have the best instructions as to how to look after your new rug.
