If you’re thinking of moving out any time soon, you’re probably taking an inventory by now and starting to realize that you have way too much stuff. Will you still be using any of these once you move out? When moving out, especially if you’re going to downsize your home, it’s ideal to get rid of the unnecessary stuff to prevent clutter. Here are some ways to do this.

7 Areas to De-Clutter Before Moving

1. House’s Junk Drawers
For those who don’t regularly clean and maintain their home, they’ll soon realize that a lot will need to be thrown out. We all have a drawer filled with a lot of stuff (or clutter). Old hair ties, old batteries, bits of strings, you name it; it’s probably in your drawer, accumulating dust.

So I suggest that you try this little experiment a month before moving out. Put some of your things in a box and if you grab something from that box, you can bring it with you. However, those items that you didn’t use just throw them out instead.

2. Old Media
Some DVDs, CDs, video games, and other pieces of media are probably collecting dust in the corner of your home. In today’s digital age where you can easily download and store everything in your computer, you won’t need this much anymore. However, there are still some people who would be willing to buy your old media. Do a quick search on the Internet to find them.

3. Clothing and Shoes You Have Not Worn for a Year
If you’re going to say that you haven’t worn these pieces of clothing because you’re saving them for a special occasion think again. Will you still be wearing that old shirt of yours? If not, it will be better if you just give it away or sell it. Someone probably needs it more than you do.

4. Old Books
How many books do you have on your shelf? If you’re a bookworm, you probably have tons. However, since you’ll be moving out of your place, it would be better if you just donate some of these, especially if the size of your new home will be smaller.

5. Outdated Electronics
Most of us keep our old electronic devices because we don’t know how to dispose of them. However, you should also realize that these items are now useless and would just take a lot of space in your new home. How will you dispose of them though? The answer is simple; consider selling them at thrift shops.

6. Old Receipts and Bills
No, you don’t really have to store them anymore, since you can just scan a copy of them. By doing so, you’ll be able to get rid of your clutter, while still saving the important stuff.

7. Anything You Didn’t Realize Was In Your Closet
Chances are, if you don’t even remember it being in the closet that means it’s not that valuable. Get rid of it.
