It’s no secret to anyone that moving home can be incredibly stressful. Not only do you have to transfer your entire life to a new town (or maybe even a new country, in some people’s cases) you also have the job of making the new house feel like home.

After all, there is such a marked difference between a house and a home, right? On that first night in your new property, you might feel slightly awkward as you sit on a floor cushion, surrounded by boxes. But don’t panic – there are certain ways you can unleash your eye for great design on your new place, mere minutes after you’ve moved in.

Get the seating organised

Moving into a bare house can be a little eerie to say the least – even more so when you don’t have anywhere comfortable to sit!

After a long day of hurling boxes around, you are going to want somewhere to put your feet up – which is why you should try and get your removal team to get the couches into your new place as quickly as possible. That way, if there isn’t enough time to sort out your new bed, at least you have somewhere comfortable to sleep for the night.

Decide what needs to go

Amid unpacking everything, there probably isn’t much time to be painting walls and laying down new flooring. That, however, doesn’t mean that you can’t plan as you go. First impressions say a lot about a property, so stand back and take a good look at each room once all your stuff is in there.

Seeing your personal possessions in your new place will make it finally seem ‘real’, and you can decide what can stay and what can go. Hate that ugly old wallpaper? Make a mental note to strip it down as soon as possible and to buy some chic white paint.

Get some privacy
Your first night in your new home should be special – it shouldn’t be somewhere that you feel awkward and uncomfortable.

One reason many people feel odd in their new home is that they don’t put curtains or blinds up for a while. But why compromise your privacy, especially in a brand new neighborhood? Get hold of some gorgeous ready made curtains to bring a more homely look to your new abode and so you can settle in for a relaxing evening.

Bring some lighting

Even if your last place was a rental house with all the lighting included, make a point of bringing some small lamps with you to your new property. In a new house, the lights may not yet work – or you may just have one large ceiling lamp in each room.

This kind of lighting can be a little harsh, and doesn’t really feel cozy at all. Bring a few table and floor lamps to scatter about your new home until you decide on how you are going to light the place – it will make all the difference to how warm the place feels.
