It’s never too early to start planning for Christmas. If you want to go big this year with your Christmas decorations, you need to start preparing sooner than later. While no one should strive to have a National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation home look-a-like, there are tasteful ways to put on a stunning display with the right lights and planning.

1. Set the Lights to Music

While it’s certainly not easy, having a light show set to music may be more attainable than you think. You will need to purchase a control system for your lights that will connect to your home computer or mobile device. It’s also possible to build a do-it-yourself system, but only consider this endeavor if you’re very tech savvy. Download software to create your show, and design the type of display you want. Once you’ve designed your show, you will need to buy plenty of lights for your display, then hang the lights and connect. It’s easier said than done, but the result makes it well worth it.

2. Be Traditional

If you want your house to stand out this year, consider going the opposite route of most over-the-top decorations, which would mean a more traditional display. Bigger isn’t always better, and your neighbors might even appreciate a toned-down light display. Of course, traditional doesn’t have to mean boring. One way to be a little more traditional is to use all white lights this Christmas instead of color strands. White lights can be elegant and beautiful, instead of the gaudiness of some color displays.

3. Hire Professionals

Many homeowners are turning to the experts to light their homes this Christmas. Not only is decorating your home tedious, it also takes a lot of time and energy some people just don’t have. If your neighborhood goes all out for Christmas and you want to compete, consider hiring a professional. Yes, they do exist. You can hire professionals to design your outside display, or you can hire a decorator to create a winter wonderland on the inside of your house. The best part is you can even hire people to take down your decorations at the end of the season.

4. Different Types of Lights and Decorations

You don’t have to only use string lights in your display. Consider adding a nativity scene, lighted reindeer, or a big blow-up snowman in your front yard to add to the decorations. You could also consider other types of lighted outdoor decorations, such as small lighted trees for your walkway, Christmas snowflakes, and LED light-show trees.

5. Choose a Charity

If you’re going to go all out, consider soliciting donations to a worthy charity from those who come to view your light show and decorations. While it’s great to bring joy to the people in your neighborhood, it’s even better to be able to give any contributions to a local charity.

Spicing up your holiday display doesn’t necessarily mean going big, but if you decide to make a big display, there are plenty of resources to streamline the process. Whether you take on the project yourself or hire a professional, the right lights and displays can add extra holiday cheer for the neighborhood.
