When meeting with my clients who plan home renovations, I always talk about current design trends. Of course their personal preferences and needs are my primary focus, but I consider it is my job to inform them on what’s hot in the design world right now. In that sense, bathrooms and kitchens for some reason are often neglected – people think about them last, concentrating mainly on the “living areas” – bedrooms and family rooms. So in today’s post I prepared this list of the current and most popular interior trends for bathrooms and kitchens.

Simplicity and minimalism

It looks like that bathrooms and kitchens with sophisticated baroque style decor are gone forever. In our pragmatic age designers mainly pay attention to ergonomics and functionality of the space. Simplicity of forms, space saving solutions, clean and uncluttered look are things that important and relevant today. There is a move to eliminate hardware, hide handles and use space wisely.

2. The stacked bond tile installation

This pattern has been used for centuries but nowadays it became especially popular as well as fashion for mid-century modern and Scandinavian style. Despite its apparent simplicity it creates a very stylish and updated look. The stacked bond installation can be used for defining the wet area in the bathrooms, showers, as well as for kitchen backsplashes.

3. Bright tiles for flooring

Floor tiles with intricate patterns and bright colours look very eye-catching against neutral walls. It is the best way to add some individuality to a room without overwhelming the space.

Tile “carpets” in the cooking areas is another popular kitchen trend and I recommend to take it into consideration if you are planning kitchen remodeling – they not only look great, but also are very practical and easy to clean.

4. Retro style

Huge Jacuzzi once considered as an epitome of luxury are nowadays more often replaced with retro looking bathtubs. Modern equipment, minimalistic decor and vintage bath – this combination we can see in almost every magazine dedicated to bath design. Separate shower cabins are replaced with bathtubs with a shower – like in the good old days.

5. Advanced technology

The bathroom of the future will be equipped with advanced electronic equipment, which will not only provide convenience but also address some environmental issues, for example conserving water.

6. Open plan

Bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms is quite usual thing in modern houses. However small dimensions often restrict from accomplishing design dreams and ideas. Simple yet radical solution will be to get rid of the wall that connects these two spaces.

7.  Making it personal

Another big trend today is that designers more often try to address such personal elements as how this particular room makes you feel. When starting to work on a project I usually spend lots of time with my clients looking together at various websites, such as Houzz, or Pinterest, defining which style they want to recreate and which of the current design trends they are particularly drawn to.
