Beautiful Apartments in Russia before the Revolution

September 3, 2015

Happy Thursday, friends!

I have just stumbled upon one Russian blog with photographs of apartments in Saint Petersburg taken before the Revolution in 1917. As you probably know before that we had monarchy in Russia. Revolution has dismantled it and made Russian Empire to collapse, which led to eventual rise of the Soviet Union. Aristocrats and intellectuals were persecuted and many of them had to leave the country. Their luxurious homes were then converted into communal apartments, where one flat would be shared by several families. This horror dwellings existed in Russia for several decades and luckily they almost extinct now.

So in this post I want to share with you the pictures of these apartments as they were before the Revolution. I really love the bohemian feel that they have. Actually some decorating ideas can be implemented even today, like for example those stunning gallery walls:

You can tell they had maids to dust all those photos! 😉 The library caught my eye. I wonder whatever happened to all those books and photos? I suppose they were completely destroyed. It was interesting to note in the one bathroom near the end, that there was a wash stand with pitchers and bowls for washing–just in case the plumbing failed, I guess. 🙂 All mod cons, with back-up!
