Bathroom perhaps is one of the most difficult spaces to design: you need to deal with so many different issues, such as limited space, safety, ergonomics, functionality, etc. Being involved now in one bathroom remodeling project I decided to write today about common renovation mistakes, which are easy to prevent and avoid unnecessary wastes of money.

1. Incorrect taps

This is one of the most frequently made mistakes which causes water splattering on the surface around the sink and also inconvenience while you wash your hands. In order to avoid it, the tap needs to be quite long and also have a certain incline.

2. Mismatched furniture or sanitaryware

Mismatched (in color or style) sanitaryware always looks very amateurish (unless you know how to mix and match) . To avoid this mistake, purchase your bath, sinks and toilets from the same manufacturer.

3. Mismatched tile seams
Usually wall and floor tiles have different sizes, so the seams on the wall and on the floor will not match, which will result in asymmetry and awkward geometry. To avoid it all what you need to do is to add the third rhythm, with a skirting board, for example. Another way to solve the problem of mismatched seams is to layer tiles diagonally, instead of linear layout.

4. Use of unappropriate lighting

Very often, when choosing lighting for the bathroom, people don’t think that it has to meet certain safety criteria. Ordinary light in a humid room is a very risky venture.  The slightest contact with water and it may just simply explode! When choosing lighting for your bathroom remember to check the IP rating – it should be IP 44.

5. Buying furniture and sanitary ware before obtaining the final size of the room

Another common mistake is purchasing furniture and sanitaryware not considering that plastering and tiles will “eat” up to 3 cm on each wall.  Corners in the bathroom should be as close to straight. Otherwise the corners tiles will be terribly wrong shaped (trapezoid) and ruin the effect that you wanted to achieve with finishing.
