Lucky Stripe

Yesterday I made a little shopping treat for myself. Walking around rails and shelves, clogged with new spring outfits, I was surprised how often I saw stripes: mainly blue & white, but also black & white.  However, what is so surprising? Yesterday I made a little shopping treat for myself. Walking around rails and shelves, clogged with new spring outfits, I was surprised how often I saw stripes: mainly blue & white, but also black & white.  However, what is so surprising? Summer is coming, and then… Long walkings on the beach, sunbathing and adventurous yachting – and how nice to do all that in our favourite marine outfits!

Inspired by latest fashion trends I decided to dedicate this post to stripes, not all of them, but solely black & white, which I personally love so much. I hope that after this post you will like them too, as this wonderful print is so dynamic, vivid and effective that is able to convert any space from ordinary to extraordinary.

Among world famous designers Jean Paul Gaultier was the one, who successfully incorporated stripes in his limited collection of furniture for Roches Boboies. The result is unforgettable look and outstanding design that is already a legend.

Surprisingly (or not?) but this print looks great in totally different interior styles: from prim classicism to frivolous rococo. In minimalistic Scandinavian rooms it can be involved through little accents, such as small area rug. In extravagant modern interiors it can be all striped “total look”.

stripes When using black & white striped print it is necessary to remember about its powerful visual effect and high emotional impact. If the stripes are too narrow, they will be quite irritating for a human eye, so it is better to go for a wider pattern. Also this motif is very energetic and stimulating, so it is better not to use it in the spaces designed for relaxation and rest. For more harmonious and peaceful look, it is better to use it on a limited surface. However, in small areas, such as powder rooms and corridors all striped background can be a wonderful nontrivial choice that will surprise and amaze.

If you like this print, but scared that it will look too bold, if used on large surfaces, you might introduce it in the room through accessories and textile – rug, upholstery, decorative cushions. Place such feature in the room and you will not recognise it!

Black and white stripes can be used to correct architectural flaws of the room. Thus, vertical stripe makes the room feel taller than it is, and it is a great solution for the rooms with low ceilings:

At the same time horizontal stripes widen the room and make it look more spacious. That’s why horizontal stripes are widely used in such small spaces as bathrooms and powder rooms. However, it is necessary to remember that horizontal stripes visually reduce the height of the room , so it is not recommendable to apply them in the spaces with low ceilings.

Black and white stripes can be converted into intricate patterns. One of them is famous “chevron”. However, this print is one of the most overused designs, so I don’t really recommend to use it, if you don’t want to seem trivial.  Rather pay attention to other interesting prints, for example, this interesting rhomboid stripes:

If you want to go even more creative route, try painting stripes on the walls, instead of buying ready wallpapers. You can even purposely make them irregular, which will add additional interest to the room:
