Lighting Trends for 2014

Some more musings about interior design trends in 2014: today we shall talk about lighting.

Lighting is such an invention that apart from its functional purpose has a huge decorative value too. Some fixtures are able to completely change the look of the space. Especially it refers to big ceiling lights and chandeliers, which I personally adore. One of the latest design trends is that chandeliers are not necessarily put in the middle of the room as it used to be, but rather above the place which you want to highlight and draw attention to – whether it is a quirky sofa, beautiful armchair or dining table. Lets have a look at some lighting tendencies which we saw in 2013 and I believe will successfully move to 2014.

1. Sculptural minimalism

The most popular within this move are bizarre, insect-like lamps from Serge Mouille. Invented in 1950’s these sculptural pieces are still hot more than half-century later. Perfect for modern lofts and apartments they will also look great in traditional and eclectic spaces.

2) DIY route

More and more people are following the DIY way when decorating their homes. Creating something with your own hands can be a fun family project and an opportunity to show off your creativity and crafts skills. One of the most favoured DIY lighting fixtures in the past years was Koushi lamp, initially invented  by American photographer Mark Eden Schooley. Of course you can purchase one, but actually it is quite easy to make one yourself: all what you need is metallic wire, cotton fabric and lamp.  Koushi lamp is an amazing addition to modern or Scandinavian style space: simple yet powerful concept!

3) Golden fever

Gold will remain one of the most trendy finishings this year. We will see lots of furnishings such as ottomans, stools, tables, decorative cushions and, of course, lighting:

4) Eastern flavours

Whimsical Moroccan style pendants Moroccan style pendants in silver and brass are still BIG. Instantly they bring such a warm and exotic feel to the house. Hang them above bedside tables or in your cozy reading nook or above dining table like on the pictures below:
