Very often when decorating our homes we don’t want to limit ourselves within one theme and we start to mix in one space objects from different styles, epochs, countries. This type of interiors are called Eclectic. Eclecticism appeared in the XIX century and initially meant the mixture of Baroque, Classicism and Renaissance. Today any interior which can’t be referred to one particular style is usually called eclectic. Does it mean that this word can be used to describe any chaotic mix of objects and genres? No, not at all. As any other concept in Interior Design it has certain decorating rules, and moreover I would say that it is one of the most difficult styles to work with. There is a certain point when tasteful mix of different objects can turn out into a complete disaster.

From the first glance objects in this room doesn't have anything in common:
From the first glance items in this room don’t have anything in common: Indian carved table, modern chair, Chesterfield sofa, huge crystal chandelier and the bust of Napoleon into the bargain. However this space doesn’t look crazy, on the contrary it is a perfect example of tastefully designed eclectic interior.

Below are presented 7 simple rules, which should be considered when designing interior in Eclectic style:

1) Limit the amount of styles you want to mix – let’s say not more than three, otherwise you are at the risk to make your room look like a garage sale.

2) Limit the amount of colours you use. I recommend to use not more than 4: one as a primary for large areas such as walls and floor (usually neutrals or dark muted colours work great), second as supportive hue – sofas, rugs, furniture  and then 2-3 as little bright accents, e.g. decorative cushions, art, lamps.

3) Use colour and texture to unite objects from different styles and periods. A table from baroque and contemporary sofa can be linked through accessories in the same colour: napkins and decorative cushions, for example.

There are so many objects in this room, yet it looks very harmonious as colour unites them all. Two primary colour for accents were chosen - blue and green, and then they are used again and again which creates a sense of flow.

4) Use layers. It is especially effective technique for arranging attractive vignette. Put large objects at the back, than add something smaller in front and so forth. Like this you will be able to give depth and interest to your display:

5) Wall art is a separate topic. In eclectic interiors classic nature morte can neighbor black and white photography and contemporary art. However to make it look harmonious you need to know two little tricks. First one is quantity – when there are a lot of objects hanging on the wall our eyes perceive it all together and don’t pay attention to the awkwardness of particular coexistence. Second one is using same picture frames and passé-partout to unite the composition.

6) Don’t be scared to experiment! This is the general idea of eclectic interiors – marrying objects that at first glance seem incompatible.

7) Don’t be scared of abundance. In fact, eclectic style is famous for using a lot of decorative objects which make interiors look very boho and cozy. Here try to be creative and add a personal touch – use your DIY projects, souvenirs brought from different countries, pieces of artwork. Tribal cushions and oriental rugs are the most indispensable features of eclectic interiors with an oriental twist.
